Djibouti PM meets Yunus to discuss microfinance and trade expansion
On Monday, Djibouti’s Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed met with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the World Food Forum in Rome. The two leaders discussed improving bilateral trade and investment, as well as replicating Bangladesh’s successful microfinance model in Djibouti. They also touched on regional geopolitics and the Rohingya crisis.
Prime Minister Mohamed praised Prof Yunus for his reputation in Djibouti and invited him to visit. He expressed interest in adopting microfinance strategies in Djibouti, a predominantly Muslim country. Prof Yunus suggested that Djibouti send a delegation to Bangladesh for hands-on experience with its microfinance institutions and mentioned the year-round training available. The meeting also explored potential trade, with Prof Yunus highlighting the opportunities for Djibouti to import affordable Bangladeshi garments and pharmaceuticals.
