Dr. Jitendra Singh calls for research labs to become startup hubs in India’s innovation drive

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, emphasized that transforming research labs into startup hubs can help drive India’s knowledge economy. Speaking at the Golden Jubilee event of CSIR-NIIST in Thiruvananthapuram, he called for an innovation-driven economy with increased private sector participation.

Singh highlighted the role of CSIR-NIIST in powering India’s shift from a technology importer to an innovation exporter. He inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Building and the CSIR-NIIST Innovation Centre, designed to turn research into viable products and startups. The Centre has already incubated 10 startups in fields ranging from agriculture to AI.

The Minister also praised NIIST’s achievements, including innovations like a biomedical waste conversion rig and a designer rice for diabetics. He stressed the importance of moving towards self-sustaining ecosystems with more private sector involvement.
