DRC, M23 sign ceasefire deal in Doha, Qatar

A significant breakthrough was made on Tuesday as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the M23 rebels signed a Ceasefire Surveillance and Verification Mechanism in Doha, Qatar. This agreement, facilitated by Qatar, marks a key step toward ending years of conflict in eastern Congo, with representatives from both sides, the African Union, the United Nations, and other international partners involved in the process.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, both the DRC armed forces and M23 rebels have agreed to halt offensive operations, withdraw from forward positions, and allow humanitarian access to displaced populations. The deal also includes joint monitoring teams and a gradual disarmament program. M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka welcomed the agreement, calling it a positive move for mutual understanding, while stressing the need for justice and inclusion to ensure lasting peace.

This new ceasefire mechanism aims to prevent flare-ups and facilitate the safe return of displaced populations, offering hope for a comprehensive peace agreement by early 2026.
