Dutch Action chain storms into Croatia

Dutch discount retailer Action plans to open its first stores in Croatia in 2026, confirmed by CEO Hajir Hajji during the release of the company’s quarterly results. The chain, which operates over 3,000 stores across 14 European countries, established a Croatian subsidiary in August 2024 with a share capital of two million euros and a registered office in Zagreb.

Action, founded in 1993, sells about 6,000 items, mostly non-food products such as household goods, cosmetics, toys, school supplies, decorations, and shelf-stable food. Roughly two-thirds of its items cost less than €3, with average customer baskets ranging from €12 to €15. The retailer refreshes most of its inventory every six months, a strategy that drives frequent visits—customers shop at Action more than 12 times per year on average.

Its arrival will intensify competition in Croatia’s discount non-food sector, where chains like Pepco, TEDi, and KiK already operate profitably. While the number and locations of Croatian stores remain undisclosed, Action is expected to share further details on its market entry in the coming months.
