Education Ministry to issue smartphone ban guidelines for students under 16

The Education Ministry (MOE) announced that guidelines will soon be issued regarding the proposed ban on smartphones for students under 16 in schools. This decision comes as part of the government’s immediate measures to improve safety at educational institutions.

The ministry supports the Cabinet’s decision to increase police monitoring in schools and agrees with the plan to set 16 as the minimum age for social media use to protect children from cyber threats. The Communications Ministry will work on enforcing this rule.

MOE also encouraged schools to strengthen the involvement of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and local communities to ensure safety. This follows recent incidents, including the tragic stabbing of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen in Bandar Utama.
