England defeats New Zealand in Devine’s ODI farewell

England eliminated New Zealand by eight wickets at the Women’s Cricket World Cup as Sophie Devine played her final one-day international match on Sunday. Amy Jones struck an unbeaten 86 to guide the four-time champions past New Zealand’s total of 168, which collapsed after Linsey Smith captured three wickets.

The victory secured England’s second place with five wins from seven matches. New Zealand managed just one victory to finish sixth, recording their worst tournament performance since 1978. Both teams formed a guard of honor as Devine departed the field after her career concluded.

Georgia Plimmer led New Zealand with 43 runs before Charlie Dean dismissed her leg before wicket. Nat Sciver-Brunt removed Devine for 23 in her farewell appearance. The White Ferns lost seven wickets for 67 runs after reaching 101 for three.

England faces South Africa in the semifinals on Wednesday at Guwahati, while Australia meets India on Thursday. Jones hit 11 boundaries and one six while sharing partnerships of 75 and 83 with Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight, respectively. Smith finished with figures of three for 30 as New Zealand folded in 38.2 overs.
