Erdogan courts Kurds in risky peace gamble
Turkey’s president will sit down on Thursday with Kurdish political leaders to advance peace talks that could reshape decades of conflict. Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to discuss legal reforms with representatives from the DEM Party and a negotiating team following the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s October 26 announcement of its withdrawal from Turkish territory.
The pro-Kurdish DEM Party said lasting peace requires constitutional protection of democratic rights and equal citizenship for all ethnic groups. Party leaders want government action to support what they call the Peace and Democratic Society Process, which aims to end violence through political solutions rather than military force.
A senior Kurdish militant leader said the initiative seeks democratic integration between Turks and Kurds based on mutual recognition rather than assimilation. The nationalist MHP party leader called the process a revival of Turkish-Kurdish brotherhood that could bring stability to the region.
