Erdogan tells Meloni he’ll make her quit smoking at Gaza summit
At a Gaza peace summit in Egypt, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took a playful jab at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, telling her he’d help her quit smoking. He commented on her appearance, then added, “But I have to make you stop smoking,” according to footage from İhlas News Agency. French President Emmanuel Macron quickly chimed in, joking, “It’s impossible!”
Meloni, aware of the challenge, responded humorously, saying quitting might make her less sociable. She had previously mentioned in a book that smoking helped her connect with world leaders. Erdogan, who has committed to a smoke-free future for Turkey, is pushing a “Smoke-Free Türkiye” campaign with plans to reduce tobacco use through 2028.
