Ethiopia rejects Egypt’s threats over Nile dam, vows to defend right to development
Ethiopia has had enough of Egypt’s threats over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a fiery statement, Addis Ababa slammed Cairo for its “colonial-era arrogance” and “hegemonic ambitions” over the Nile. Ethiopia won’t back down, insisting its right to use the Nile for development is non-negotiable, despite Egypt’s president warning of military action.
The Ethiopian government called Egypt’s rhetoric a failed attempt at domination, accusing Cairo of undermining African unity. The dam, which Ethiopia sees as a vital lifeline, is a symbol of African sovereignty—one that Egypt refuses to accept. Ethiopia is confident its rise cannot be stopped, and it won’t be intimidated by threats or panic-inducing claims about droughts and floods. Both nations stand firm, but Ethiopia is pushing for dialogue, not domination, to resolve the conflict.
