EU sets aside 1.8 billion euros to boost defence industry

The European Union agreed on a plan to improve its defence industry, starting with 1.5 billion euros. This money will help increase production and supply chains, and support cooperation with Ukraine. The plan, known as the European Defence Industry Programme, runs from 2025 to 2027.

The programme aims to reduce the EU’s reliance on weapons and systems from outside the bloc. Some countries wanted to buy more goods from the US, but the deal limits foreign-made parts to 35 percent. The EU hopes to cut its reliance on outside sources from 60 percent to 45 percent. Some of the money will go to helping Ukraine’s defence.
