Trump unveils plan to make IVF more affordable through employer benefits
Donald Trump announced a plan on Thursday to make in vitro fertilization (IVF) more affordable, a step in fulfilling a campaign promise. Earlier this year, he called himself the “fertilization president” and pledged to address IVF accessibility, a divisive issue within his base, particularly between pro-natalist supporters and conservative Christians.
The plan involves encouraging employers to offer IVF coverage as a separate benefit, similar to how dental and vision care are managed. However, Trump did not propose subsidies or mandates for employers to provide such benefits. He also mentioned that some IVF-related drugs might be sold at discounted prices through a new website, TrumpRx, starting in 2026.
The proposal has sparked division, with some conservative Christians opposing IVF due to concerns about embryo discarding. However, Trump emphasized the plan’s pro-life stance. Currently, about a quarter of US employers offer IVF coverage, and some states require insurers to include it in their plans.
Industry experts, like TJ Farnsworth, see the plan as a good start, but warn it may not have an immediate impact on patients.
