Ex-commando reveals Parvanov convoy came under fire in Iraq

Former commando Alexi Dimitrov has shared previously undisclosed details about security operations during President Georgi Parvanov’s 2004 visit to Karbala, a time marked by fierce clashes and significant losses for Bulgarian troops in Iraq. In an interview, Dimitrov recalled that while escorting the president from an American base to the Bulgarian camp, their convoy came under fire from nearby buildings. The armored jeep carrying Parvanov sustained two hits but protected its passengers, thanks to its reinforced plating. The security team, equipped only with personal firearms, could not safely return fire due to the risk of harming civilians.

Dimitrov described the conditions in Karbala as a “real war,” with Bulgarian forces engaged in intense combat, facing attacks from rooftops and being embedded in a civilian urban environment. He recounted personal experiences of close calls with bullets and shrapnel, highlighting the dangers faced daily by the contingent. Operations included ambushes, reconnaissance, and raids on weapons caches, with one notable mission involving a multi-day operation in a palace used by terrorist groups, ultimately leading to the discovery of Al Qaeda hideouts.

The Bulgarian contingent endured heavy casualties during its deployment, losing several soldiers in attacks. Dimitrov also noted the psychological impact of President Parvanov’s visit, saying it boosted the morale of troops who had been demoralized by previous losses. American forces praised the professionalism of the Bulgarian special units, with Dimitrov’s team earning recognition for their role in protecting US officials during attempted attacks. Reflecting on his experiences, Dimitrov emphasized the harsh realities of war and the lasting effects on those who served.
