Radev urges support for jailed ex-French president Sarkozy
President Rumen Radev has called for the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is currently serving a five-year prison sentence following a conviction related to campaign financing. Radev made his appeal during a ceremony in which he awarded the President’s Badge of Honor to Anthony Leyden, the former British Ambassador to Libya, in recognition of Leyden’s role in securing the release of Bulgarian nurses detained in Libya.
Radev highlighted Sarkozy’s contributions, noting that the former French leader and his wife played a significant part in helping secure the return of Bulgarian medical workers who were imprisoned in Libya from 1999 until 2007. Expressing gratitude for Sarkozy’s efforts, Radev endorsed similar appeals from past Bulgarian presidents and officials, urging European politicians and public figures to support Sarkozy’s release. The president emphasized that such support is an expression of true appreciation for the former French leader’s commitment during a critical moment for Bulgaria.
