Farmers crushed as crops rot unsold

A vegetable farmer from Pazardzhik destroyed 25 tons of cauliflower this spring after retail chains offered purchase prices too low to sustain operations. Maria and her husband cultivate leeks, pumpkins, cabbage, beets, and potatoes, but receive only 19 to 20 stotinki per kilogram from major retailers who delay payments indefinitely.

Transportation expenses compound financial losses for regional producers selling at Sofia markets. Fuel costs between 110 and 150 leva for the 240-kilometer round trip from Pazardzhik, excluding vehicle maintenance and highway tolls. Commodity exchanges offer comparable rates around 30 stotinki per kilogram while subjecting farmers to difficult negotiations.

The crisis extends across agricultural sectors. Another Pazardzhik producer destroyed greenhouse cucumbers in June after wholesale prices fell below 90 stotinki. Thousands of Bulgarian growers face identical pressures despite producing quality crops, forcing many to abandon farming entirely.
