Parliament snubs doctors, fury erupts
Bulgarian lawmakers rejected three proposals to increase salaries for junior medical staff on Tuesday after more than three hours of debate. The governing coalition of GERB-SDF, BSP, and There Is Such a People opposed bills from opposition parties Vazrazhdane and PP-DB that would guarantee physicians 150% of the national average wage.
Professor Kostadin Angelov from GERB-SDF pledged the National Health Insurance Fund budget would address compensation concerns by the Oct. 31 deadline. General practitioner Daniel Kiprov told BNT that parliament delivered empty promises rather than meaningful dialogue on overnight shift payments and professional development funding.
Opposition figures accused officials of stalling after four months of negotiations. People’s Party leader Asen Vassilev said the government deceived protesting doctors who seek a minimum base pay equal to 150 percent of average national earnings plus enhanced overnight rates.
Medical professionals continue demonstrating for improved compensation despite years of training. Many physicians struggle financially in major cities based on current salary structures.
