Unions lash out at wage cut betrayal
Bulgaria’s main labor confederation condemned the government’s proposed minimum wage of 605 euros for 2026 as a violation of tripartite agreements. Chief economist Lyuboslav Kostov calculated that workers would lose 180 euros annually, compared to the originally planned 620-euro threshold, calling the reduction scandalous on Wednesday.
The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions warned that 270,000 full-time employees would face reduced purchasing power under the draft budget. Kostov said the income cut translates into 36 fewer bread loaves, 10 kilograms less cheese, 8 fewer egg cartons, and 7 kilograms less meat per year for minimum-wage earners.
Budget sector workers will receive just a 5 percent salary increase, which the union characterized as grossly inadequate. Officials are financing deficit reductions by decreasing compensation for the nation’s poorest workers, according to trade union representatives.
