Final six World Cup spots to be decided in March playoffs
Twenty teams will contest playoff matches to secure six remaining spots at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Europe will send four additional nations through a 16-team knockout format, while an intercontinental tournament featuring six countries will determine two more qualifiers.
European runners-up, including Italy, Denmark, Turkey and Ukraine, enter as top seeds alongside Poland, Wales, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. These eight nations face lower-ranked sides and UEFA Nations League qualifiers Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Ireland, Romania, Sweden, Northern Ireland and North Macedonia. Semifinal winners advance to four decisive matches.
The intercontinental competition pairs Iraq and Congo as seeded finalists against four unseeded teams from CONCACAF, South America and Oceania. Jamaica, Suriname, Bolivia and New Caledonia must navigate semifinals before challenging for World Cup berths. Both playoff competitions conclude before organizers conduct the tournament draw, with opening matches scheduled for June.
