Govt clears draft Supreme Court ordinance
Bangladesh’s interim government approved a draft ordinance on Thursday that transfers judicial administrative powers from the Law Ministry to the Supreme Court. The Advisory Council met at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon under Muhammad Yunus and endorsed policy changes affecting lower court operations. Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said the court will gain independent budget authority and financial management once the measure takes effect. Officials plan additional consultations with representatives from finance and public administration before final approval.
The proposed Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance grants the judiciary complete control over the transfer, appointment, promotion, and disciplinary proceedings of judges. Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam joined Nazrul at a Foreign Service Academy briefing after the session. Council members requested further review of financial aspects before implementation. The government also passed amendments that enabled the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate offenses committed by local and foreign nationals.
