Govt speeds Aman rice collection ahead vote
Bangladesh intends to conclude most of its Aman rice acquisition before parliamentary elections, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumdar announced following the official launch of the seasonal collection campaign. District and upazila food administrators will face heavy election responsibilities, prompting directives to fulfill procurement goals ahead of electoral activities. The administration wants to transfer substantial grain reserves to incoming leadership.
Officials established rates of Tk34 per kilogram for paddy alongside Tk50 for parboiled rice and Tk49 for atap varieties. Minimum acquisition benchmarks include 50,000 tonnes of paddy, 600,000 tonnes of parboiled rice, and 50,000 tonnes of atap rice. Majumdar emphasized that exceeding targets would reduce import dependency.
The Public Food Distribution System has expanded to serve 5.5 million families, representing a 500,000-household increase. Monthly allocations of 30 kilograms at Tk15 per kilogram will extend across six months rather than five, measures officials believe will stabilize market prices.
