Guyana launches first Caribbean World Trade Centre

Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, called the launch of the World Trade Centre Georgetown a timely and visionary step for Guyana. Speaking at the event in Kingston, Georgetown, he said it aligns with the country’s rapid economic growth and its expanding global trade role.

He praised Demerara Distillers Limited Chairman Komal Samaroo for leading the effort to bring the global brand to Guyana, calling it a sign of the company’s commitment to international competitiveness. President Ali strongly supports the initiative, Singh added, noting that Georgetown now joins a global network of cities hosting World Trade Centres.

Singh highlighted infrastructure projects like the Linden–Lethem road to Brazil and the Corentyne River Bridge to Suriname as key to regional trade. He cited IMF data showing Guyana’s average annual growth near 40 percent since 2021—the highest in the Western Hemisphere—and stressed the goal of building a globally competitive non-oil economy.

The seven-floor WTCG, commissioned in June, is the first in CARICOM. It offers modern office space, trade support, cybersecurity services, and event facilities. Affiliated with the World Trade Centres Association, it aims to help local businesses connect globally and prosper locally. Private Sector Commission Chairman Gerry Gouveia Jr. said Guyana’s potential goes beyond comparisons—it will forge its own path.
