Saint Lucia PM urges RSS to tackle modern threats
Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, as Chairman of the Regional Security System Council of Ministers, called on member states to strengthen regional cooperation and respond to modern security threats as the RSS marked its 43rd anniversary. Speaking at a high-level meeting on October 20, 2025, he warned that peace in the Caribbean cannot be taken for granted amid rising risks like cybercrime, organized gangs, climate instability, and transnational crime.
Pierre said the RSS remains vital to citizen safety and regional stability. He noted that while the security landscape has changed since the RSS formed in the turbulent 1970s and 1980s, core challenges persist. He urged greater investment in cybersecurity training and alignment of national laws to combat cross-border crime more effectively.
He reaffirmed Saint Lucia’s support for the RSS and encouraged closer ties with international partners, including the United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union, and the United States. Pierre also backed expanding the RSS across CARICOM to boost collective resilience and stressed the need for strong succession planning and institutional independence. The two-day meeting ended on October 21, with discussions on improving intelligence sharing and regional readiness.
