Gwanda-Maphisa road project boosts Matabeleland South economy
The Gwanda-Maphisa road construction project is progressing well under Zimbabwe’s Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP), boosting connectivity and economic activity in Matabeleland South Province. This key road, linking Gwanda with Matobo District, is a priority for the government’s development agenda. It is expected to improve travel efficiency, ease the movement of goods, and support socio-economic growth in the region.
For local travelers, the project offers relief from long detours. “This road will make it easier to transport our farming produce and reduce transport costs,” said a commuter.
Current works include a 10-kilometre new section and the resealing of a five-kilometre stretch. The project aims to connect all communities in Zimbabwe, with future plans to link Gwanda to Maphisa and Mpoengs Border Post. This road will cut travel time and promote economic activity in surrounding districts, especially Matobo. The project is timely, as Maphisa will host next year’s Independence Day celebrations.
