Hamas returns bodies of Israeli hostages under truce

On Wednesday, Hamas announced that it had handed over all the bodies of deceased Israeli hostages it recovered. The Israeli military confirmed that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) had received two more bodies in Gaza as part of a ceasefire deal facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The truce has already seen the release of 20 Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas had returned seven of the 28 known deceased hostages’ bodies and a separate body unrelated to the captives.

Hamas’s military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed that it had given all living prisoners and the bodies it could access, adding that retrieving the rest would need special equipment. Israel insists Hamas must ensure the full return of all remains.

The issue has sparked political debate in Israel, with pressure mounting on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to link humanitarian aid to the return of the deceased hostages. Far-right officials, like National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, have threatened to block aid unless all bodies are returned.

The ongoing truce remains fragile, with both sides under intense pressure as recovery efforts continue in Gaza. The future of the ceasefire will depend on the return of all hostages’ remains and whether the truce can be maintained.
