Harmanpreet Singh aims for India’s ninth Olympic gold in hockey

Hockey is deeply ingrained in India’s sports culture, and Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian Men’s Hockey Team, is a modern-day legend of the game. He looks to the past for inspiration, particularly to the 1948 London Olympics when India secured a historic 4-0 win over Great Britain to claim its first Olympic gold just a year after independence. This victory marked the first time the Indian flag was raised at the Olympics.

Harmanpreet spoke about how the 1948 win is still a source of inspiration. He recalled hearing stories from seniors and meeting Balbir Singh Sr, a key player in that historic match. The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics offer the next chance for Harmanpreet’s team to add another medal to India’s tally, with the goal of claiming the nation’s ninth Olympic gold in hockey.
