Afghan minister snubs women journalists in Delhi uproar
India denied any involvement in the controversy surrounding a press conference hosted by Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi on Saturday. The Ministry of External Affairs clarified that Afghanistan’s Consul General in Mumbai arranged the event and sent invites to selected Delhi-based journalists. The Afghan Embassy, where the event was held, falls outside Indian government control.
The press event excluded women journalists, sparking outrage on social media. Many critics, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, condemning the exclusion of female reporters. The controversy deepened as journalists revealed they were only informed about the event the morning of. The selective media access and restrictions raised concerns about transparency in India’s dealings with the Taliban.
