Harry Brook’s 135 saves England from disaster
England avoided complete disaster in the first one-day international against New Zealand on Sunday when captain Harry Brook scored 135 runs at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The tourists collapsed to 10-4 and later 56-6 before Brook led a recovery that ended with England all out for 223 in the 36th over. Zakary Foulkes took four wickets while Jacob Duffy claimed three as the home side dominated early.
Brook reached his century with three consecutive sixes off Duffy and hit 11 sixes total in his 101-ball innings. Jamie Overton contributed 46 runs in an 87-run partnership with Brook for the seventh wicket. Matt Henry removed Jamie Smith with the first ball after New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl.
Ben Duckett and Joe Root fell in the same over to Foulkes, who generated significant pace and movement. The series continues on Wednesday in Hamilton and on Saturday in Wellington. England won the preceding Twenty20 series 1-0 after rain washed out two matches.
