Health minister orders probe into UV lamp burns at hospital

Minister of Health Silvi Kirilov has demanded an immediate report from a hospital director following an incident where a mother and her five-month-old baby suffered eye burns from a UV lamp. The incident occurred on October 13 when the family, admitted with COVID-19, was placed in a room with an active UV lamp. Kirilov ordered an urgent inspection by the Executive Agency “Medical Supervision” to investigate the circumstances, including adherence to disinfection rules and staff actions. Sanctions will follow if violations are found.

The mother, Diana Ivanova, noticed the UV light causing discomfort and swelling in her eyes. After seeking help at Alexandrovska Hospital, ophthalmologists confirmed the damage was due to prolonged UV exposure. She expressed concern over the hospital’s refusal to provide further assistance and the threat of denial of care if she filed a complaint. Minister Kirilov ensured the family would receive full support, including follow-up exams and medical documentation.
