Hemus fix ends, chaos still ahead
Workers finished resurfacing the Sofia-bound lanes of Hemus Motorway between Yana village and the capital entrance, the Road Infrastructure Agency said on Thursday. Crews replaced pavement over 8.3 kilometers, installed reinforcing geogrids, upgraded drainage systems, and installed new barriers, lane markings, and road signs.
Teams will complete emergency lane work over several days while traffic moves without restrictions, though officials urged motorists to drive carefully. The preventive maintenance started on September 15 after summer surveys produced technical plans for the project.
Separate repairs continue between kilometers 23 and 30, where Sofia-bound traffic remains completely closed. All vehicles use the Varna-bound roadway, split into opposing directions with one lane in each direction. Authorities may add reversible lanes on Friday and Saturday to provide two Varna-bound lanes and one toward Sofia, then flip the configuration on Sunday and on Monday.
Traffic police can modify arrangements as needed. Work began on October 21 and should finish by November 15 if the weather cooperates.
