MPs kill bid to end fake Monday breaks
Bulgaria’s parliament rejected legislation that would have eliminated compensatory Mondays off when national holidays fall on weekends. Deputy Labor Minister Gergana Aleksova opposed the measure, noting Bulgarian employees average 39 weekly work hours compared with 33.9 in Germany, and 1,659 annual hours versus Germany’s 1,335. She argued existing rules provide predictability and balance in employment relationships.
Hasan Ademov from the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms said the proposal targeted workers’ rest days, which labor law protects. He questioned why the parliament includes so many official holidays in the Labor Code. Tsvetan Predov from There Is Such a People noted the previous National Assembly could have addressed this issue earlier.
Venko Sabrutev from We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria said his coalition opposed the amendment because it failed to balance worker and employer interests. Yordan Ivanov and fellow lawmakers from the same coalition had introduced the bill to parliament’s Labor and Social Policy Committee.
