Sofia chases glory with solar stunt
Sofia launched its first citizen-led energy cooperative at the European Week of Regions and Cities, with plans to install rooftop solar panels at Academic Emilian Stanev Second High School. Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bobcheva said the 75-kilowatt system will supply 40 percent of the school’s electricity needs while distributing surplus power to other municipal buildings.
The Vitosha district selected the renovated school from 22 potential sites for the pilot program backed by Sofia Energy Agency and the LIFE-BECKON initiative. Private citizens and businesses will fund the photovoltaic array through collective investment, marking a shift toward decentralized renewable energy production in the capital.
Officials project an annual output of 151 megawatt-hours, with 120 megawatt-hours available for distribution beyond school consumption. The project demonstrates how local communities can participate directly in clean energy generation while reducing dependence on traditional power sources.
