High Court grants bail to Abdul Latif Siddiqui in terror case
Bangladesh’s High Court approved bail Thursday for former textiles minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed by Shahbagh Police Station. Justices ASM Abdul Mobin and Sagir Hossain issued the order, clearing the 87-year-old’s path for release after three months of detention. State prosecutors immediately announced plans to challenge the ruling before the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division. Siddiqui’s legal representative confirmed no further barriers exist to his freedom following the judicial decision.
Siddiqui and 15 co-accused faced charges stemming from an August 28 incident at a Dhaka Reporters Unity program about Bangladesh’s Liberation War history. Police alleged attendees conspired to promote armed conflict through their “Manch 71” platform. Court records describe protesters storming the venue, destroying banners, and trapping participants, including Dhaka University professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon. A lower court had previously rejected bail requests on September 4. The accused maintained that their activities were solely aimed at protecting historical accuracy regarding the independence struggle.
