Islamic parties march in Dhaka, demand national referendum
A coalition of Islamic political groups, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, staged a demonstration Thursday in Dhaka demanding a November national referendum and four additional reforms. The march departed Paltan intersection at noon toward the Chief Adviser’s Jamuna residence to present written demands. Organizers called for ending alleged political intimidation during the caretaker administration, ensuring equitable election access for all parties, protecting religious freedom, and permitting unrestricted political organizing.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar led the assembly, which was formed by 10:30 a.m., with participants from southern Dhaka neighborhoods carrying banners. Representatives from six allied organizations joined the gathering before proceeding to submit their memorandum. Authorities reinforced police presence around Paltan ahead of the procession to prevent unforeseen incidents. The demonstration represented coordinated pressure from religious political factions seeking constitutional changes ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle. Organizers emphasized the referendum timing as critical for national stability while asserting their right to peaceful assembly under interim governance.
