Modern fish landing center under construction in Bhola

Construction of a modern fish landing facility is underway in Bangladesh’s Bhola district, offering new opportunities for coastal fishing communities. The 70 million taka project initiated in January by the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation will conclude in December, establishing the region’s first advanced center for hilsa preservation and trade along the Meghna River in Kathir Matha. Officials confirm the two-story complex will serve fishermen from multiple districts while creating jobs in processing, packaging, and distribution.

The center will feature auction areas, cold storage, quality testing labs, and docking infrastructure to accommodate 36 vendors simultaneously. More than 50 laborers work daily on the site, incorporating amenities like ice production facilities and inspection rooms. Local fishermen have long advocated for such infrastructure, noting Bhola’s reputation as the hilsa capital lacked proper handling facilities. Senior Fisheries Officer Mehedi Hasan Bhuiyan stated the facility would elevate livelihoods and modernize fish conservation across the coastal region, with wholesalers expected to travel from neighboring areas upon completion. The project addresses longstanding challenges in post-harvest management while supporting Bhola’s primary economic sector.
