India U17 women a point away from AFC Asian Cup qualification
The Indian U17 women’s football team is one step away from making history by becoming the first-ever batch to earn a spot in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup. India needs just a point in their final Group G match against Uzbekistan on Friday to secure their place in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup in China 2026. The match will be streamed live on Kygyrz Sport TV’s YouTube channel.
Captain Julan Nongmaithem, who scored a last-minute goal in India’s 2-1 win over Kyrgyz Republic, dedicated the goal to her late father. After Kyrgyzstan defeated Uzbekistan, India now leads the group, and a draw will ensure they top the standings.
Head coach Joakim Alexandersson, while pleased with the win, admitted that the team’s performance wasn’t perfect. He believes that despite the tough challenge from Uzbekistan, India will aim for a win in the final match, confident in their preparation.
This qualification could be a significant milestone for women’s football in India, following the senior team’s recent success in qualifying for the 2026 Asian Cup.
