Instagram tightens content filters for teens, aligns with PG-13 standards
Instagram has tightened content filters for teen accounts, aligning them with PG-13 movie standards. This move is part of an effort by Meta and other platforms to prioritize user well-being, particularly for children. The update, described as the most significant for Teen Accounts since their introduction last year, aims to ensure teens see content similar to what’s allowed in PG-13 films—intended for those 13 and older.
Examples of restricted content include risky behaviors like extreme dieting or promoting alcohol and tobacco use. Instagram will continue using age detection tech to prevent teens from bypassing restrictions. The update, which also hides harmful challenges, is rolling out in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, with plans for wider expansion.
Additionally, parents will have more control with a “restricted content” option, allowing them to limit what their children can see, comment on, or interact with, including AI chats. This comes as California passes a law mandating safeguards for AI chatbot interactions.
