Dhaka University Sociology students protest over suspended teachers’ return to campus

Students from Dhaka University’s Sociology Department protested on Tuesday, demanding action against six teachers suspended for allegedly opposing the July uprising and threatening protesting students. The students marched from the Social Sciences Faculty to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, chanting slogans like “Against tyranny, direct action.”

The protest followed reports that one of the suspended teachers, AKM Jamal Uddin, had resumed visiting faculty lounges and attempted to re-enter the department. A fact-finding committee had been formed earlier to investigate the allegations, leading to the suspension of the six teachers. However, the students claim there has been no progress in the investigation, and one of the accused has returned to campus.

Sarbamitra Chakma of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) condemned the return of suspended teachers, calling it morally unacceptable. The students issued three demands: speed up the investigation, restrict the teachers’ access to campus, and ensure a safe, democratic learning environment.
