Italy’s Brothers of Italy propose burqa, niqab ban in public places

Italy’s ruling Brothers of Italy Party has proposed a law to ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs in all public spaces, aiming to combat what they call “Islamic separatism.” The law would fine those who wear face-covering garments between €300 to €3,000. The bill also seeks to regulate mosque funding, prevent forced marriages, and require unrecognized religious groups to disclose foreign donations. Inspired by France’s 2011 burqa ban, Italy’s proposal follows similar moves by other European countries. Critics argue the law targets Islamic practices, with the Union of Islamic Communities of Italy yet to respond.
