ITN’s Valchev warns budget will test government’s stability
European Parliament member Ivaylo Valchev from There Is Such a People told a morning television program that Bulgaria’s budget negotiations will reveal which political forces prioritize national interests over partisan advantages. The minority government requires parliamentary backing to function effectively, and Valchev expressed hope that proposed policies will attract opposition support beyond the ruling coalition.
Energy security and fiscal planning will demonstrate whether lawmakers think strategically about state needs, according to the MEP. He clarified that Bulgaria’s government inquired about procedures for requesting oil derogations rather than seeking permission itself, criticizing European policymakers for prioritizing ideology over economic pragmatism. Individual nations now attempt separate economic solutions instead of coordinated continental responses, Valchev argued.
The politician rejected suggestions that his party would buckle under pressure following recent governmental restructuring, stating ITN adhered to its governance agreement while demanding clearer public explanations of policy decisions. On speculation about President Rumen Radev forming a new political movement, Valchev noted his party previously advocated constitutional reforms toward presidential governance as a systemic change rather than support for any individual leader. Budget debates will separate those working toward stability from politicians calculating electoral positioning, he concluded.
