Lobsters appear in Black Sea, scientists puzzled by find

Fishermen operating near Nessebar pulled a kilogram-plus lobster from the Black Sea, startling researchers who documented similar captures along both coastal regions during recent months. Assoc. Prof. Violin Raykov from the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences initially questioned whether colleagues were teasing him about the discovery before confirming its authenticity through multiple sources.

The crustaceans appear to belong to European varieties that typically inhabit warmer Atlantic waters with higher salt concentrations. Scientists examine three potential explanations for their presence: vessel ballast water carrying marine life between distant zones, rising temperatures from shifting climate patterns creating hospitable environments, or intentional releases from private fish farms. The Black Sea contains significantly less salt than oceans where these animals normally thrive, raising doubts about whether populations can reproduce successfully in local conditions.

Raykov acknowledges that warming trends have enabled numerous heat-preferring species to establish permanent Black Sea populations, but cautions against premature conclusions regarding lobster colonization. Institute researchers continue tracking additional sightings while investigating whether these represent temporary anomalies or signs of ecological transformation along Bulgarian shores.
