Iva Miteva criticizes GERB, warns of dangerous legal changes and unstable coalition
Iva Miteva, former Speaker of the National Assembly, commented on the current political situation, highlighting that the government has no conscience and the parliament, with its current majority, has relative stability but is capable of doing anything. She pointed out that the only potential destabilization could come from within, and that Boyko Borisov is trying to act and speak, likely to save his party.
Miteva criticized recent proposals, such as the attempt to amend the Law on the State Agency for National Security (DANS) to reduce the president’s powers. She said this change doesn’t align with democratic principles and warned GERB to reconsider, recalling that similar changes in 2013 turned against those who made them.
She also expressed concern over ITN’s bill proposing imprisonment for spreading personal information, which she described as dangerously productive and reflected poor legal culture. Miteva accused Speaker Natalia Kiselova of exceeding her powers by blocking discussions on a referendum about Bulgaria joining the eurozone, even though Kiselova had previously supported such a referendum.
Miteva, who left ITN in 2022, said that the formation of the current government was a mistake and criticized ITN for forming a coalition with GERB and MRF, the very parties they had opposed. She expressed disappointment in how people in regulatory bodies were appointed, and emphasized that the rhetoric of “stability and predictability” used by the ruling majority is misleading.
