Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan demand referendum before election
On Tuesday, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh formed a human chain from Gabtoli to Jatrabari in Dhaka, demanding a referendum on the July Charter before the national election. The parties also called for fair elections with a level playing field and a Proportional Representation system.
Between 11 am and 12 pm, participants held banners and placards supporting their five-point demand. At a rally, Jamaat leaders urged the government to hold the election in February only after a referendum and to ensure equal opportunities for all political parties.
Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher of Jamaat accused some advisers of conspiring to rig the election and warned of exposing their names. Islami Andolan Bangladesh also emphasized the importance of implementing the July Charter and holding a referendum before announcing the election schedule.
