Jamaat leader warns of sacrifices over referendum demand

Jamaat-e-Islami deputy leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher declared his party would protect gains from July’s movement, stating members would sacrifice lives again if required. He delivered these remarks on Thursday during a Paltan rally preceding a memorandum submission to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser. Taher employed a metaphor about persisting until objectives are met, emphasizing the necessity of securing their goals.

Taher demanded that a national referendum occur before the upcoming election without delay or manipulation. He urged immediate dialogue with the interim government, acting as a neutral mediator. The Jamaat leader confirmed his party had established a negotiation panel and invited the BNP to participate. He stressed constitutional reforms must be finalized before voting, rejecting any postponement tactics. Taher warned against disregarding these conditions while reaffirming commitment to the movement’s outcomes. His comments followed coalition protests pressing similar demands earlier that day.
