DU protests govt’s decision to withdraw music, PE teacher posts

Dhaka University educators and students demonstrated on Thursday against the government’s cancellation of music and physical education teaching positions in primary schools. Organizers from the Music Department and Cultural Organisation Council began the rally at Aparajeyo Bangla with the national anthem, joined by drama and performance studies faculty alongside student union representatives.

Participants argued that these subjects are vital for children’s comprehensive growth, not optional extras. Music instructor Azizur Rahman Tuhin warned that removing them would harm national identity formation. Theatre professor Israfil Shahin emphasized that cultural education strengthens religious values. The protest followed the November 3 policy reversal, which scrapped positions created in August. Officials cited implementation challenges and potential teacher disparities as reasons, though critics linked the decision to objections from conservative groups. Demonstrators insisted that arts and physical training remain fundamental to developing well-rounded citizens.
