Jamaica airports may close as Hurricane Melissa nears
Jamaica’s two international airports may close within 24 hours if a Hurricane Warning is issued. Energy Minister Daryl Vaz confirmed this Thursday after emergency protocols were activated ahead of Tropical Storm Melissa. He spoke at a storm briefing at Jamaica House.
Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay cleared drains and trees, tested generators with 36 hours of fuel, and stocked emergency supplies. Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston secured assets and completed structural and power system checks. Closures depend on the storm’s track and may not occur at both sites simultaneously. Rainfall of 8 to 14 inches may hit southern Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and eastern Jamaica by Sunday. Other areas, like Puerto Rico, could see up to 4 inches. Hospitals in Jamaica limited non-emergency care on Thursday, and some government offices closed. Airport operations may halt Friday evening or Saturday, but will resume as soon as conditions allow.
