Jaya Bachchan urges industry to drop ‘Bollywood’ label

Veteran actress and parliamentarian Jaya Bachchan received the Cine Icon Award at the Filmfare Awards in Ahmedabad and used the moment to address a long-held concern. She asked the industry to stop calling itself Bollywood and instead recognize it as the Hindi-Indian film industry.

Speaking to loud applause, she said many people—actors, writers, directors, and fans—refer to it as Bollywood, but that term diminishes its identity. She urged everyone to honor the industry by its true name, noting her 55 years of experience in it.

She accepted the award with humility and thanked the audience for their love. Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar presented the honor. Johar called her Aunty J, saying she has been like a mother to him since childhood and praising her warmth and legacy. He recalled directing her in films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kal Ho Na Ho under his Dharma Productions banner. The heartfelt moment drew cheers from the crowd.
