JK-JAAC demands end to PoK unrest, outlines 38-point charter
In response to recent violent clashes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JK-JAAC), a coalition of traders, lawyers, and civil society groups, released a 38-point charter with various demands. The unrest, which has left nine dead, including police officers, occurred in towns such as Mirpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad. The charter calls for a restoration of the flour subsidy, better job reservations for Kashmiris, an end to the privileges of judges and civil servants, and other reforms including the cancellation of the PoK Bank’s merger and measures against timber smuggling.
On October 2, JK-JAAC member Sardar Umar Nazir Kashmiri appealed to international media and human rights organizations, condemning state repression, human rights violations, and the killing of unarmed civilians since the protests began. The government has imposed a communication blackout and blocked essential goods. Nazir criticized Pakistan’s actions as violations of human rights and international agreements, emphasizing the peaceful nature of the ongoing movement.
