KDP calls for calm after Pirde election tensions
Kurdish Democratic Party officials urged restraint after election tensions erupted in Pirde on Friday between Kurdish residents and Turkmen Front supporters. Party leaders contacted security forces and political counterparts to restore calm in the ethnically mixed town within Kirkuk province.
Campaign workers raised partisan flags in Kurdish neighborhoods and sparked confrontations that required police intervention. KDP candidate Zozik Sheikh Latif condemned the provocations and emphasized that Kurds and Turkmen have shared the area peacefully for generations.
Party officials directed members to avoid aggressive responses and resolve disputes through legal channels. Senior representatives held talks with Turkmen Front leader Muhammed Sama’an and agreed that authorities must enforce campaign regulations.
Security personnel maintained visible patrols across Pirde after the order returned. Officials confirmed the incident would not disrupt parliamentary elections scheduled for the coming weeks as political activity intensifies throughout Iraq.
