Kiran Rao celebrates 13 Filmfare wins for Laapataa Ladies
Filmmaker Kiran Rao is thrilled after her directorial, Laapataa Ladies, won 13 Filmfare Awards. Speaking to IANS in Mumbai on Tuesday, she shared her excitement about the film’s success, noting its offbeat narrative, which stands apart from the typical action and drama popular in big cities. Kiran stayed true to her vision, refusing to make compromises for commercial appeal.
One of her boldest decisions was casting newcomers instead of relying on big stars for box-office success. She emphasized that the film needed authentic, believable characters to make its unusual, dramatic story work. Kiran credited Aamir Khan, the producer, for supporting this casting choice.
She also faced challenges shooting during the COVID-19 pandemic, with real locations and live trains adding to the difficulty. Despite the odds, the film was released in cinemas, rather than going straight to OTT, which Kiran believed played a key role in its success, helped further by the film’s reach on streaming platforms.
