Kolarova – Kotsev case sparks political clash over judiciary
Political scientist Prof. Rumyana Kolarova discussed the case of Blagomir Kotsev, highlighting two interpretations: the PP-DB’s view of political repression and the judiciary’s stance that there is solid evidence of guilt. Kolarova believes this reflects a political clash between the PP-DB and the judiciary, as the issue of the prosecutor’s office is key to the coalition.
She also noted that the government’s approach is shaped by public opinion, pointing to the new draft law on ITN as an example, but argued that radical reforms are unlikely. Regarding the garbage crisis, Kolarova questioned if Sofia’s mayor, Vasil Terziev, could solve it without government help.
Kolarova commented on the Wall Street Journal article, suggesting the political impact would lead to conflicting interpretations and no common ground among politicians. She expressed doubt about the approval of the Lukoil asset sale and criticized the decision not to appoint heads of DAR and DATO through presidential decree, calling it a significant shift in the president’s powers.
She concluded that President Rumen Radev’s political prospects are diminishing due to the dynamics between the government and opposition.
