Kostadinov blasts speed limits as road deaths rise
Kostadin Kostadinov said his Vazrazhdane party will work with specialists to draft legislation removing average speed enforcement from Bulgaria’s traffic laws because the monitoring system endangers motorists and contributes to fatalities. Speaking from the parliamentary floor on Tuesday, the party leader argued that comprehensive road safety revisions approved during September have backfired by increasing casualties rather than reducing them.
Authorities issued citations to more than 33,000 motorists within a single month under the revised regulations, with foreign drivers accounting for roughly 40 percent of those penalties, Kostadinov stated. Total violations have surpassed one million, meaning approximately half of all drivers received fines, he added. The party chairman accused officials of prioritizing revenue generation over protecting lives and criticized enforcement officers for hiding along roadways to catch violators.
Kostadinov maintained that the legislative overhaul produced a dramatic surge in financial penalties without corresponding safety improvements.
